Cerritos College’s sophomore swimmer, Nicholas Herrera, wanting to get back in the water to compete again with his teammates after a year of no competitive play.

“I really miss swimming with my teammates, and just practicing in the water as well, swimming was very much a part of my exercising lifestyle, with no pool I have turned to other temporary alternatives to try and stay fit during these concerning times.”

Herrera in his first year swimming for the Cerritos team has finished first in the 200 breaststroke, 300-meter race, and placed third in the 100-meter at the St. Paul classic swim meet.

He is a very athletic person and sticks to a regiment to be active during these unfortunate times, “Some of the training that I am doing to keep myself in shape is 100 pushups and mixed-use of 25lb dumbbells every night and some use of an ab wheel, also I try to go and cycle 8 miles every Tuesday/Thursday.”

During his training he reminisce on his time in the water, and wants to relive that feeling as soon it is go time hit the water.

“There is Nothing but a boost of adrenaline and determination to win, competing in swim competitions is a completely different feeling, you against 7 other swimmers racing for the fastest time, And at the end feeling of relief and accomplishment.”

As a student athlete a lot can be expected out of you and Herrera has been able to keep up the expectation people have for him and keep on the path to have success not only in his sport but also in his classes.

“My motivation has been staying with me due to staying on track with school and completing other goals whilst waiting to get back in the water, progress is progress no matter what you are doing, so it’s ok, just cant wait to get back in the water after all this time and exercise and see my teammates again.”

Swimming season is usually during the spring time, and as we see major, high school, and college sports get back into the swing of things most of the community college are still waiting for that call in order to come back to compete.

“There has been some news foreshadowing our return home to the pool, rumor has it that we will be returning a lot sooner than you think possibly late this month in March.”
